Draino is full of harsh chemicals and when you use it on your drains you run the risk of being burned. Not only is it dangerous for it to make contact with your skin, but the fumes are also dangerous. You have to keep pets and children away from the bottle and the drains while in use. Draino is absolutely dangerous and even deadly to small children should they ingest it. It is better for everyone in the home if you use natural methods to clear the drain. Another important aspect of clearing a drain is in prevention.

Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar together creates a foaming action that may help to release clogs. Start by adding water to 2 large pots and bringing them to a boil. Reserve a cup of boiling water and pour the remaining hot water into the drain. Measure out a half a cup of baking soda and dump into the drain and let it sit for a couple of minutes.  Next, mix the 1 cup of hot water with a cup of plain vinegar. Pour the 2 cups of liquid into the drain. If you can, put a stopper into the drain to keep the “reaction” with the baking soda and vinegar in the drain. If you can’t put a stopper in it, cover the sink or tub with a towel or a large pan to keep the reaction from spewing out. Let this sit for 10 minutes. Pour the remaining pot of boiling water down the drain to flush it out.

If the drain is still slow, try the whole process another time or two until it works. You may need to use a plunger for especially tough clogs.

The best way to prevent clogs is to be mindful of what you put down the drain. Try to avoid pouring things into the drain that may clog it such as grease and oil. For the shower and for the kitchen sink use a screen catcher. This will catch all the things that should not go down the drain. Take the time to clean the screens at least once a day. The kitchen drain screen may need to be cleaned more often.

If you have a garbage disposal you need to run a quartered lemon or orange through it once a month at least to keep the blades clean. If the garbage disposal has trouble staying clean you may want to clean the disposal once a week or biweekly.
