Jack Frost is starting to nip at our noses here in Colorado, and that means one thing: It’s green tomato season! Little House in the Suburbs posted a yummy-sounding recipe for Crispy Green Tomato Pickles. Readers, have you ever tried these?

I’ve found a few great buys at the dollar store up the street, such as picture frames, gift bags and metal chip-bag-clips.  Are dollar stores worth a stop? What should you avoid (hint: can you say “lead” and “salmonella”)? What are the good bargains? Now, the Frugal Yankee has taken a close look at dollar stores in general.

School is back in session, and at our house, that means I am constantly looking for good snacks for kids. This post at the Fun Times Guide is a reminder of Five Ways to Save on Kids’ Snacks. We’ve been doing a lot of fruit for snacks, but I have to confess, Mlle. Cheap is hooked on individually packaged yogurt and pudding. I’m making some homemade yogurt and going to mix it up with some homemade peach preserves to try to wean her off the pre-packaged goodies I grabbed at the store in a back-to-school panic.

And speaking of homemade yogurt, it’s been all over the Web this week, with a special emphasis on yogurt cheese. We have recently discovered delicious Greek-style, thick yogurt at a couple of stores, and a friend mentioned that she usually drains her homemade yogurt to make it a bit thicker. Two posts this week address some seriously drained yogurt that turns into yogurt cheese — described as similar to the German Quark by Down to Earth, and as labneh (with several great savory purposes) by The Nourished Kitchen, who uses a special starter.

Phew! That’s it for this week. Next week, I’ll be back to talk about gardens, budgets and more.

Wow, I never thought homemade yogurt became so popular over the web. For my hubby, it has become so ordinary making homemade yogurt for the family. We love yogurt and making homemade yogurt helps us in our budgeting. Even my three dogs love yogurt so we give them Fruity Yogurt treats!
