If you’ve been saving your pennies to replace a worn-out, energy-wasting appliance this year, look before you buy to find out if you can get a rebate on a new, energy-efficient appliance.

A new U.S. government program offered by the Department of Energy will be similar to “cash for clunkers” for energy-efficient appliances, including heating and cooling equipment, water heaters, clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers. People who buy new energy-efficient appliances to replace old ones will be eligible for cash rebates in various amounts. Find your state here to learn about specific details.

The program is launching in many states in March, although it has already begun in some places, and will run until February 2012, although funds are anticipated to run out before then.

For an overview of what to expect from the program, including how to evaluate whether you should replace your appliance, take a look at this article on msnbc.com.
