I manage a farmers market in Portland, OR. We have several farms that offer "market bucks". The customer purchases $200 or more and receives a discount. One farm offers 5% discount for a $200 share and 10% for a $500 share. The customer then selects whatever he or she wants at the market stand. Since we have markets open 5 days a week in the summer and my market is open year round, customers can purchase farm-direct fresh produce, save some money and help support local farms. I'm surprised this arrangement isn't more popular.

These are all great comments, and I think they show that you can find a CSA that suits your needs. Some specialize in obscure veggies, some in staples, and it's great that they are spreading out into so many different options (like mushrooms, fruit, flowers, you name it).

@Val - We thought Cure sounded great, but we can't drive that far every week. And to me, it's not a disadvantage to receive a pre-packed box.

Whatever floats your ... er ... lettuce!

Oooh, a mushroom share. That sounds *very* tempting. We've been beyond happy with our CSA too (Monroe) and are currently enjoying the bounty of the winter share. I've come up with lots of things to do with carrots and beets. :-) The best part about the winter share (IMO) is that it's helping us keep on-budget. I was afraid the grocery money would run out before the end of the month, until we got our latest bag of produce. So... I third your recommendation: a CSA is absolutely worth-while!!

We joined the Happy Heart Farm last year and also loved our CSA experience. Happy Heart was the first CSA in Colorado and is super conveniently located just across the street from our house! My office-mate was a member of Grant, and on weeks our produce hauls offered us each different things, we happily traded items. We also paid a bit extra for a mushroom share from Hazel Dell and that was the BEST use of money ever. Those mushrooms are heavenly.

That is so great. I do get my vegetables and fruits from CSA. I live in Riverside, CA. Great that you are promoting CSA...

CSAs are a great way to be a part of a family farm! We're going back to Cure Farm (http://cureorganicfarm.com/) in Boulder this year. Their produce is top quality and I like the way you can load your own bags at the farm.

We tried Pachamama (http://www.pachamamafarm.com) and the food was fine but they simply give you a pre-packed box when you go to the farm plus it's a little farther away for us.

Monroe Farm (http://www.monroefarm.com/) was our first CSA and it was the mother of them all. Years ago they shared their bumper crops at no extra cost f you wanted to drive up to the farm and the shares were huge!
